In Pergola, players develop their gardens, grow new plants, and attract insects and small animals. On their turn, a player chooses one of the four available tools, picks the presented items, and arranges them in their garden. Then they perform the action corresponding to the chosen tool. Since players have a lot of freedom in arranging plants in their gardens, after fifteen rounds each garden looks completely different and scores differently. The player who accumulates the most points wins.

Pergola is an engaging Euro-style game for 1 to 4 players, aged 10 and older, that offers unparalleled freedom in arranging game elements. The game invites players to connect with nature, creating a serene sense of beauty and tranquility, with no negative interactions. Players compete to create the most outstanding garden, filled with a delightful mix of flowers and charming insects.

The game’s mechanics aim to offer a balance between action drafting, tile placement and set collection. Each player starts with an empty garden board, which they aim to fill with various plants to attract as many insects as possible. The players’ decisions will influence both the appearance of their gardens and their final scores, but there are multiple paths to victory.

At the core of the game is the selection of gardening tools linked to specific action spaces on the action board; each tool allows players to take two elements from the supply. Although these elements can be arranged on the player’s garden board in any way, they must be placed according to certain rules to create sets and earn points at the end of the game. After placing the elements, the player performs the action corresponding to their selected tool, which can involve fluttering insects, moving a water drop, taking a leaf, or jumping their frog in the pond. The player’s turn ends with refilling the action board with a new tool and placing the used tool in their tool pot.

The game ends when all players have collected 15 tools in their pots. Players then tally points based on the categories presented on the scoring board. The player with the highest score wins the game!

Pergola was inspired by Rebel Studio’s friend Anna, a true plant lover known for her green thumb and a preference for games with minimal negative interaction. The game features unique hand-painted watercolor illustrations by Karolina Kijak-Dzikońska, an incredibly talented Polish artist who created the beautiful artwork for the Meadow series.
